5 in 1 Survival Whistle Review

The 5 in 1 survival whistle is an almost perfect addition to any emergency survival bag. The features of this device provide the owner with a signal whistle, signal mirror, compass, waterproof match container and a flint.

This product measures 4 5/8" in length with a 1 1/8" diameter and weighs 1.1 ounces empty. At first glance the most obvious and overlooked feature is the orange color. This might seem like a small consideration, but this color makes the tool easy to find in your bag and also on the ground if dropped. When you need a tool like this, it helps if you can find it.

Match Container
After I removed my purchase from the package, I immediately unscrewed the top to look inside. When I did, I noticed that the small rubber gasket was thicker than I expected. This thickness should help give a better seal and prevent it from tearing. The inside compartment has a diameter of 3/4" and a depth of 2 1/2". Although this is designed to hold matches, it could be used to hold other items like firestarters, fishing line, or bandages along with a few matches. The outside of the unit has grooves running the length of the body which makes it easy to grip and hold.

Survival Whistle
The survival whistle itself, is molded into the end of the tool and includes a small plastic pea inside. This produced a good, normal whistle sound. Although not the loudest whistle, it is louder than I can personally whistle and much easier. Since it is already attached, the chances of losing it are greatly reduced which is a plus for me.

Signal Mirror
The signal mirror is small and just inside the bottom of the inner cap. Although the quality of the mirror is good, I am a bit concerned about the overall size. With a diameter of just 1 1/8 inches, it is a pretty small target. Combine the size with the fact that it is inside the cap walls, the angle of reflection is somewhat limited.

Survival Compass
The compass is molded into the top of the cap and is liquid filled. This allows the compass to move fairly well provided the unit is held vertically. This orientation allows the user to easily view the compass rose with North being colored in red to make it easily found. This also helps to make is more readable in low light situations. The rose includes measurements in 30 degree increments to make it easier for those people that might not want to do the math to get a heading.

Firestarter
The flint that is included is mounted in the middle of the body on the outside. This is a fairly small piece that is designed to generate sparks using a knife or similar scraping device. Although the unit does not include a striker, a small metal piece could easily be placed inside the unit. I did find it a bit difficult to get a spark to fall into my firestarter. It would have been easier if it was at the end, but it can still be done, it just takes a few extra attempts.

Lastly, a piece of braided cord is included which has already been placed through the molded eye and knotted. This allows the device to be hung around the neck making it very easy to check the compass and keeps it handy. This cord could also be untied and removed for other uses since it measures 36" and is thick enough to support a pretty good weight without breaking.
